In the same Reddit AMA that CEO Carl Pei answered some tough questions about the OnePlus One, he mentioned its successor, which “should be out in Q2 or Q3 of 2015″. The mention of a successor came in response to a question from a Redditor named wonkadonk:
How soon will a “OnePlus Two” (or whatever) be available with an ARMv8 processor and Android L? Would you say more like spring or fall 2015?
If that username isn’t news enough in itself, Carl Pei’s full answer follows:
OnePlus 2 should be out in Q2 or Q3 of 2015. By that time, I’d think Android L would be standard.
We’ve seen a lot of people asking for a smaller device, and want to let everyone know that we hear you. We’re thinking about it.
Notice that he left out any mention of a processor – while we wouldn’t expect a firm commitment this early in the game, the ARM v8-based Snapdragon 808 an 810 processors will probably be well on the way by Q2 or Q3 2015 if they’re not already being mass-produced by then. The more likely scenario in my opinion is a Snapdragon 805 and a QHD display, especially since the 805 with its Adreno 420 GPU should be able to more efficiently handle that many pixels without draining your battery too quickly.
Also of note is his mention that the OnePlus team is “thinking about” using a smaller chassis for the OnePlus 2 in the wake of feedback from consumers asking for such. Unfortunately, it’s likely we’ll see a reprise of the invite/preorder system for the OnePlus 2. Also, don’t look for a tablet from them anytime soon, as they seem quite satisfied leaving that market to the Nexus line.
